Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had many dreams. His last and ultimate dream was to bring the message of peace and prosperity for ALL Americans to her elected officials. In his words, “The highest patriotism demands the ending of the [Vietnam] war and the opening of a bloodless war to final victory over racism and poverty.”
President Lyndon B. Johnson and the 1964 Democratic Party election victory landslide both ran on the campaign to end both racial injustice and economic injustice. The Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, which authorized the Food Stamp and Job Corps programs, the Social Security Act of 1965, which authorized the Medicare and Medicaid programs, etc, combined with Federal tax revenues increasing dramatically from $94 billion in 1961 to $150 billion in 1967, certainly provided both the legislative and the financial means to tackle the economic hardships facing millions of Americans, but what appeared to be legitimate steps towards fulfilling campaign promises of ‘The Great Society’ was in fact blatantly insincere lip service from Washington D.C. Johnson siphoned substantial Federal budget dollars away from these ‘War on Poverty’ efforts to expand his ‘War on Vietnam’.
King, Jr., Robert Kennedy and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) had enough of Johnson’s deceitful bait and switch political tactics and they organized the ‘Poor People's Campaign’ (PPC) in November 1967 to invade and occupy the Washington Mall beginning the Spring of 1968 until the grievances of the poor and betrayed were redressed by their government with action, not more rhetoric. King Jr. was assassinated April 4, 1968, weeks before the PPC was set to march on D.C.

In honor of King, Jr., his surviving family and the SCLC decided to continue with the PPC and landed in D.C. on May 12, 1968. The demonstrators built a settlement of teepee-looking A-frame homes collectively called ‘Resurrection City’ on the Washington Mall, but the mission to underscore the needs of the poor flamed out soon after Robert Kennedy was assassinated June 6, 1968. The Vietnam War continued through another two Presidential Administrations and finally ended in retreat in April, 1975. Vietnam War casualties included 3 to 4 million Vietnamese from both sides, 1.5 to 2 million Laotians and Cambodians, and 58,159 U.S. soldiers.
King Jr. and his unrelenting passionate NONPARTISAN anti-war voice was violently stolen from humanity but his spirit was graciously reborn thirty-six years later in the Rosa Parks of the current day anti-war movement - Cindy Sheehan - whose son Casey was killed while serving in Iraq on April 4th, 2004, the anniversary of King’s death. Per Sheehan’s latest book - Myth America II: The Twenty Greatest Myths of the Robber Class and the Case for Revolution - the overwhelming pain Cindy felt from the loss of her son was all at once transformed into the nonconforming “Peace Mom” that we pro-peace activists all know and love when her daughter Carly graciously shared the following poem:

Sheehan instantly became the face of the anti-war(s) movement on August 6, 2005 when she began a war protest campout three miles from President George W. Bush's Ranch near Crawford, Texas, which soon became know as “Camp Casey” by the media. Cindy's bold “Camp Casey” effort led to the “Bring Them Home Now Tour,” a 2008 Congressional Election run as an Independent against the warmonger U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and many arrests along the way for expressing her Constitutionally guaranteed right to politically unpopular speech.
Barack Obama’s 2008 Presidential Election victory silenced most of the anti-war movement NOT because Obama brought the troops home, in fact Obama has expanded the “U.S. Wars of Terror” against Iraq and Afghanistan to also include Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia, but fell silent because MOST of the Bush era anti-war movement was PARTISAN, entirely invested in the Democratic political party, holding firm allegiance to Barack 'the Cult of Personality' Obama and was ONLY concerned about stopping the senseless human cost of war when the 'other' political party was on top of the D.C. power structure.
Sheehan, a rare exception, completely ignored the false left/right paradigm and has consistently embraced the principled message of peace regardless of the political affiliation of office holders. Although Cindy lost her Obama supporting comrades in the struggle for peace when the Democrats swept into office in 2008, but she never lost her principled will. She spoke out vehemently against Obama’s pro-war 2008 campaign message and even protested on the streets of Oslo, Norway, as President Barack Obama accepted the Nobel (War is) Peace Prize in December, 2009.
Invoking the memory Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Resurrection City,” Sheehan recently founded the group “Peace of the Action” and setup camp near the Washington Monument on March 15, 2010, to, in her words, “commit aggressive acts of civil resistance to shut down the violent military-corporate empire,” fearless actions inspired by these words:

The camp, meant to be an indefinite demonstration largely stalled when Sheehan was wrongfully arrested (yet again) for Constitutionally protected right to free speech on March 20th, which was the seven-year anniversary of the Iraq Invasion and Occupation War campaign, and because many of the college student protesters had to return to school from break.
Sheehan, the consummate optimist and fighter is NOT bailing, just regrouping. “To take advantage of the energy and enthusiasm of our young people, we are planning on returning in June to set up Camp and start our actions again.” Sheehan wrote on her website, PeaceOfTheAction.org, continuing, “So we will be keeping the spirit of the Camp alive until the students get out of school and, hopefully, we can make a go of it in the summer. It’s really up to you—we have laid the foundation, now it’s your turn to be the builders.”
So there you have it - if you want to see an end to the senseless Oil'nam wars in our lifetime, simply look in the mirror. Obama wasn’t change. Cindy can’t do it all alone. You are all that is needed. So please help America's 'Peace Mom' resurrect Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Resurrection City this Summer to end our generation's Vietnam and our generation's economic devastation.

11,000 veterans who had colonoscopies at U.S. Veterans Affairs hospitals may have been exposed to hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV.
The veterans were advised equipment used during their treatment was not sterilized. Of those so far that responded by having follow-up blood checks, 8 have tested positive for HIV. Twelve of the veterans have tested positive for hepatitis B, and 37 have tested positive for hepatitis C.
This week it was learned a 55-year-old North Miami man, Juan Rivera, a thirteen-year Army veteran with a wife and 5 children, filed notice last month that he will sue the Federal Government claiming he was infected with HIV during a colonoscopy at the Miami Veterans Administration hospital.
He had a colonoscopy at the hospital in May last year.
Rivera is suing the government for $20 million.
On March 28, the VA department wrote to more than 3,000 veterans who had colonoscopies at the Miami VA hospital advising them that improperly cleaned equipment might have exposed them to hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV.
VA officials say endoscopy equipment was rinsed instead of being sterilizing as was required by the manufacturer's directions.
Similar problems were uncovered at VA hospitals in Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Augusta, Ga. The total number of veterans subsequently blew out to more than 11,000.
Following congressional inquiries, Miami VA hospital director Mary Berrocal disciplined up to 10 employees.
